This November Mr Smith, as well as a number of other Apollo staff, are taking part in the annual Movember charity event.
Movember is a moustache growing charity event held each November to raise both funds and awareness for men’s health issues. The funds raised in Australia support equally the two biggest health issues men face – prostate cancer and male mental health. The funds raised are directed to programs run directly by the Movember Foundation and it’s men’s health partners, the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia and Beyondblue: the national depression initiative. Together, the three channels work together to ensure that Movember funds are supporting a broad range of innovative, world-class programs in the areas of awareness and education, survivorship and research.

As part of our preparation for Grade 6 and our voting for the 2013 School Leaders, we held a Leadership Conference on the afternoon of Wednesday October 31st. We had three guest speakers who all hold leadership positions in our local community. Each spoke to the grade 5’s about their own personal experiences as leaders as well as giving the students insight into different types of leadership as well as the challenges and opportunities that face leaders.
The grade 5 teachers hope that all students enjoyed the afternoon and also learned some more about how to be effective leaders. To complete our Leadership Conference it would be great to hear from the students about what they enjoyed and what they learned on the afternoon. Students can provide these through commenting on this post.
Special thanks to Hannah, Shawn and Mr Reeve, our school principal, on providing such interesting and informative presentations to the students.
On Monday October 22nd 5S took part in the school Walkathon. All students completed 10-12 laps of school on a sensational spring day. Everyone looked great dressed up as Olympic Athletes.
Congratulations to Ben and Bianca on being the first two students to return their sponsorship forms to school.
As part of our involvement in the Global Read Aloud program the students in 5S created drawings and diagrams of Ivan’s domain. Here are a few samples.
Congratulations 4G on your first experiences using iPads.
Good luck for your future involvement in our Grade 5 1 to 1 iPad program in 2013.
Over the next few weeks, the Grade 5 teachers will be visiting the Grade 4 classrooms with a tub full of surprises…..iPads! The Grade 5 team have prepared two sessions to engage students and explore the multimedia possibilities in a 1 to 1 classroom, but not forgetting to reflect upon important cybersmart protocols. Grade 5, 2013 is only a term away!
The Parent Information night (held in the Community Center at APPS on Wednesday 17th October), will further explain 1 to 1 learning. A number of this year’s grade 5 students will each present an app that they have found useful to engage, enhance and support their learning in 2012.
So Grade 4s…Can you describe 5 things that excite you about using iPads in Grade 5 in 2013?
Name the current Australian Prime Minister and Opposition Leader and the political parties they lead?
You can respond by commenting on this post!
How many Prime Ministers has Australia had?
Research the answer to present back to class.
Welcome back to school for term four everyone!
It’s going to be a big term in Grade 5 with a lot of fantastic things to be done and to learn about. Our inquiry unit for this term is Social Harmony, focusing on leadership and the Australian Political System.
We are also involved in the Global Read Aloud where we are reading the text ‘The One and Only Ivan’. Also this term we re-commence our Summer Sports for inter-school sport.
It’s going to be a fantastic term in Grade 5!
As part of our term four Writing curriculum we will need all the students to collect some items from their holidays to use to assist their writing.
Items can include:
Digital and/or printed photos, movie tickets, holiday souvenirs, pamphlets, brochures etc
Best wishes to all the students in 5S and I hope they all have a happy and safe holiday break.
